511NJ Twitter Service

The New Jersey Department of Transportation's (NJDOT) 511NJ Travel Information service is now using Twitter!

The 511NJ Twitter handles push the event information available as part of the 511NJ system to followers who are interested in receiving information regarding roadways in New Jersey.  This service is provided as an alternate method to receive real-time traffic information.

New Jersey’s 511 Twitter service automatically distributes information via quick, frequent messages or “tweets” about traffic incidents,congestion and construction on the New Jersey Turnpike, Garden State Parkway,Atlantic City Expressway, all interstates, certain highways throughout the state as well as bridge and tunnel crossings. 

 “Tweets” are short, 140-character messages that can be viewed online or sent to a mobile device.  Subscribing to New Jersey’s 511 tweets is free; however, normal cellphone text rates do apply.

Some tweets may exceed the 140-character limit.  In this case, tiny URLs are provided that will link the user to more information regarding these specific incidents on the 511NJ website.  Alternatively, a user may choose to simply dial “5-1-1” and listen to full event message.

Lastly, please be aware that New Jersey law states that using a hand-held communications device while driving a vehicle is a primary offense.The New Jersey Department of Transportation strongly recommends that motorists pull over while driving, or, ask a passenger to retrieve the messages.
